HOW TO REPORT ANIMAL CRUELTY
Pennsylvania animal rescue officials hope a new 24-hour, toll-free hot line will make it easier for those who witness abuse of animals to get help.
The number is (866) 601-SPCA (601-7722). It is only to be used to report animal cruelty.
The nonprofit PSPCA is based in Philadelphia, with six satellite facilities across the state including one in Stroudsburg and a staff of 14 law enforcement agents with authority to enforce animal cruelty laws.
According to Howard Nelson, executive director of the PSPCA, abuse cases have been increasing. The SPCA responded to 8,000 calls last year, up from 6,000 in 2006.
"There is an epidemic of cruelty in this state," Nelson said. "We want to encourage people to report cruelty and make it easy and quick."
